Spiritual Body Builders
DAILY REMINDER #3 - "I can increase my faith by reading God's Word"
Romans 10:17 says, "Now faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."
One of my hobbies is exercise and working out. I really enjoy the days that I get to work out the upper body muscles. As a kid, those were the glamor muscles that everyone wanted to build, so of course, the more you work out a certain muscle, the stronger it will become. I knew that if I just kept on working out that those muscles would get bigger and bigger, stronger and stronger. One of the things you realize is that the more weight you lift, the more resistance your muscles face. That is the key to building strong muscles.
Faith is kind of a "spiritual" muscle. It requires a consistent regimen of getting into the "spiritual" gym and working on that muscle over and over again. One of the key ingredients is to read and meditate on the Bible. In our main scripture above, it says that "faith comes by hearing...the Word of God." The more we do this, the stronger our faith becomes. And remember, without faith it is impossible to please God, so we want to make sure we are increasing in faith.
As we get into the scripture, we begin to realize how much our lives (thoughts, motivations, intentions, words, actions, etc.) contradict His standard. As we are convicted by that standard, we experience the spiritual resistance that is required for faith to build. By hearing and reading the Bible, our souls are in conflict because our sinful desires are working against His spirit that lives in us. Thus, a faith is increasing in us as we yield to His Word, and allow it to sculpt us from the inside out!
Work that faith muscle!
